AOL Fraud
As I was visiting news.com, I spotted an article about AOL. Anything having to do with AOL interests me because of how much disgust I have for them. As I clicked on the article to read it….it was a great surprise to me. AOL is being sued by the US for $210 million because of some fradulant activity they have been doing with a company called PurchasePro. You may read more details here.

they took money from my account and I never even had them. Now I had to file a fraud report and dont know when I will get my money back. If ever!!! You can only file a fraud report once so if they take anymore I wont get it back.

AOL Queida- The Fraudlant billing practices of American On Line
Dear Fellow AOL Fraud victims,
I was billed for 8 months for an aol account that was not open. I had cancelled theaol service a year before the fraudulant billing started.
AOL fraud department agreed to only reemberse me for 3 months. They said that I needed to keep better track of my finances so that this would not happen. How well I keep track of my account is none of AOL’s business.
When I got my bank statement, AOL did NOT even reemberse me for the three months that they promised, only 2 of them. I waited an hour to talk to the fraud department again and then they realized their error and sent me the third month’s reembersment within a week. Had I not looked at the statement, AOL, using the fraudulant charge affidavit an apparently legally document, would have ripped me off again.
The fraud representative said that the fraud money that AOL retains goes to finance their AOL fraud department. He said it consists of 16 employees.
If AOL can establish an illegal policy where they obtain funds fraudulantly, we as consumers must be allowed to establish an equally as devious policy. I believe one in which we say that if we are ever fraudulantly charged by AOL, we automatically sue them for $2,390,000 for each time.
Thank you,
John

I had a 30 day trial membership with aol i canceled the membership within the 30 day period of time and literally told aol not to charge my account in the future, end of story. Law doesnt allow anyone to just inadvertantly go in and charge a bank account without credit card validation and allowence by the actual cardholder. Thinking everything was ok I looked at my bank statement and in January there was a charge from AOL. I was livid. I called them and thinking I would get a credit professional representative I would be able to get this resolved. What they told me now is the key to how they do this to so many people. When you get a 30 day free account and cancel it they go ahead and give you a free 30 day additional “just in case you change your mind” then if you use it after the 30 days by “ONLY SIGNING ON THE ICON” that is what activates the auto credit card charge activation of your account” therefore they consider it an active charge. I am flabbergasted. What happened in my case is that my minor child accidentally signed on the icon didnt even go into
aol actually and it started the account again and that is where the charge occured.
I went ahead and called my bank to do a fraud
report for them because a supervisor there told me
that not only would they not cancel it for me
but they will continue to charge me as long as they have the credit card information I will get charged.
That is plain fraud!!!!!!
Noone can use your credit card without your authorization. So this is fraud.
I work for one of the major credit card companies
across the company and we always get fraud complaints against AOL with their accounts fraudulently charged the fees for AOL without their knowledge. AOL always offers to cancel and give credits and not charge again. This happens millions of times I am sure. I had to literally close my card and open a new one and that is the only way to cure the ongoing charges and stop them from billing you again on that credit card.
I now am getting collection calls from AOL for the
$24.95 that AOL was deducted off of their account through my bank from the money they stole from
me. I live in Ohio and in Ohio if you tell someone or a company to cease and desist the telephone calls at your house it is against the law for them to continue the calls. I was told today from
FRITZ, after Michael called my house (both sounded like they were the same person with the same accent
I couldnt even understand them. He told me they will not honor that and the calls will persist
and the collection department will continue to call
and collect on the debt because it is valid. I threatened him at that point that if he calls my house that I will take action against each person that does so and I will have a record of it.
He hung up on me because I told him I was going to
record the conversation.
I will be contacting the Attorney general in my area and the Federal Trade Commission as well for
unscrupulous business practices.
We all need to stop saying I wish there was a class
action law suit agains AOL, we all need to sign a petition and get the attention of someone about this and actually get it resolved.
May 6th, 2006 at 5:29pm
If you want to send me info as far as your situation and are willing to sign a petition in regard the involuntary charges on your credit card after cancelation please send me your story to my email.
If enough people do this maybe someone will listen.

I sighned up for a free trial with aol when I got my new computer, it was a free offer that came with my dell computer. I cancled it shortly there after (this was back in August of 05. This January they started charging me again, on a different card.
I called them in March (yes I didn’t notice it before, bad me). I was told that the charges were from a third party under a totally different name, and that they would reemberse me all charges.
I called back in May when I didn’t see the money back in my account, and there story changed. It was now for an account that I had closed in August of the previous year, and since I no longer could locate the letter that had the cancelation number there was nothing I could do. The only thing that they would do is give me 2 free months of AOL. I told them that this was an insult, I wanted my money back, and would no longer have anything to do with AOL. Not only would they not let me talk to a supervisor they hung up on me.
I called back and after a half hour of waiting through there promts and hold I was connected with another operator. I told the whole story again and this time they said they would reemberse me 1 month worth.
I feel totally rapped not only did they comment that no one has used that account in as far back as they can see, but that my account shows no prior call ins. If there is a patition to sign, I will, no problem. They took my money with out my permision and treated my like scum when I caught them. How can they use a card that I didn’t give them permision to use? This is so wrong.

I will do whatever it takes to receive reimbursement for the hundreds of dollars I have been charged monthly since cancelling my membership In 2001. I have moved three times since then and not once have I been on-line. Unfortunately during those moves I failed to keep track of my bank statements.
How did I finally find out about these fraudulent charges? The day I went in to close my bank account. I was told that I had an overdue balance and that I was liable for this amount, plus whatever the bank charged for insufficient funds.
After some investigating on the banks part I was informed that AOL had been charging my account for the last few months. I quickly drove home and started gathering all my unopened bank statements.
I have been billed by AOL for services unrendered since 2001. What was my next step? Call the billing department at AOL. Which I did, only to be put on hold for more than five minutes. When someone eventually answered they gave me another number to cancel a service that I hadn’t used since 2001. Reluctantly I called. Five to ten minutes later I finally got through. After explaining my situation to the moran on the other line, he had the nerve to suggest that I stay with AOL and get 3 months of free service for my inconvenience. Are these people idiots? Politely through clenched teeth I declined.
“Call the fraud department at AOL.” He suggested.
That was on 5/5/06. I have been trying to get someone to answer the phone at AOL’S fraud line every day since. My Waiting time is anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes, depending on how sore my neck gets. I can almost picture the empty office on the other side of the line with numerous phones ringing off the hook, and a MOVED sign hanging from the office door. To say that I am irritated is an understatement. How can a company get away with stealing in front of the whole world?
Tomorrow I am contacting an Attorney to find out what my rights are. I WILL NOT STAND BACK AND BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF, IGNORED AND RIPPED OFF AT THE SAME TIME. LETS ALL FIGHT TO PUT A STOP TO THIS SCAM! LETS GET ENOUGH LETTERS AND SIGNITURES TO BRING IT TO THE ATTENTION OF OUR LEGISLATORS. LETS GET OUR HARD EARNED MONIES BACK!!!!!!!!!
May 17th, 2006 at 4:30pm
I do have one question for you all. Why don’t you contact your credit card companies and have them dispute it instead? That’s their job.

I, too, have been an AOL victim! I accepted the “free offer” from AOL when I bought my new Dell computer. After the trial period, I canceled the service; that was in September 2005. Little did I realize, AOL continued to bill me through my credit card. I called AOL and after a lengthy conversation with the rep (who I found out was in India), I was referred to the fraud department. That was a week ago. I have been trying to get through to the fraud department every day since. Their hours are 10AM to 7PM EST, but no matter what time you call during that time frame, you cannot get anyone to answer the phone! I am totally frustrated to learn that I have been billed every month since September for the AOL service that I did not use! I even asked the rep to verify the useage on my “account” and he agreed that there was NONE! I think I will take the advice of one of the other people who posted a note and file a dispute with my credit card company. What else can we do?
May 18th, 2006 at 12:31pm
I think someone should start a class-action law suit against AOL for the fraud.

I too have been serviced thoroughly by aol and the barbed dildo that they call their fraud dept.
I have never, nor will i ever, singed up for a trial subscription. furthermore, i have never inserted any for of an aol offer into my computer. that said….
I was looking at an account online the other day (a credit card that is paid off and had not been used in over a year, or at least so i thought.)and ther is $121.44 in aol charges. blah blah blah…
i say we start a class action.. This also happened to my mother 2 years ago. I have documents to prove both.

I am 81 yrs old, on S. Sec., have NEVER had AOL services……since March ‘05, and probably before, AOL had deducted my cking acct of sixty-dollars a month…after 3 wks of being to stay on hold for 45mins, I was told to send affadavit, which I did//I think I can afford a lawyer even if takes more than the seven-hundred dollars plus, they owe me..I need this money badly..I don’t have a credit card and threw the 30 day freebie away when it appeared in my mailbox….how can this be…it’s an injustice of the greatest magnitude…..who cares?
May 28th, 2006 at 12:20pm
I have a friend from whom AOL took almost a thousand dollars. They did it with his check card. We need a lawyer to start a case to get people’s money back.
Are there any lawyers reading this who are taking cases?
Please post so we can begin some legal action to stop the scammers.
Thank you.

If you notice a wonky charge on your account the first thing to do is not to complain to AOL but to call your bank and put a ‘reverse charge’ request in. That way AOL has to deal with your bank, who is paid to deal with this problem, instead of harassing you.
Call you bank and put a stop charge/reverse charge on charges that AOL put on you.
May 28th, 2006 at 12:32pm
The bank wasn’t as helpful as expected. HE closed his debit card and had to get a new one, etc. Still out the money.
May 28th, 2006 at 12:38pm
“Wasn’t as helpful as expected”? This doesn’t tell me if you put a stop charge/reverse charge on the amount AOL charged you.
May 28th, 2006 at 12:50pm
He did everything that anyone (AOL or his bank) told him to do; he tried to file with their fraud department but has had little success with them. This went on for a couple of years and they kept creating new accounts which were never used then tried to tell him he could have opened them for a business. They are STEALING from people They are THIEVES. I don’t think his bank allowed a reverse charge. It is Bank of America. He told me originally that they put the money back into his account, but later withdrew it.

I have over 16 fraud attempts from persons using AOL e-mail addresses. The frauds are both US & overseas and amount to over $30,000 each. Are you interested in solving this or become known as the fraud address?
e-mail: zarkov3@juno.com. End.

I too have had to change my credit card in order to get AOL from debiting my account, now Iam getting calls from a collection co what can I do?
June 24th, 2006 at 7:49am
Kathy, you should write a letter and send it to all of the credit bureaus and request that the info be placed in your file.
Why are you getting collection calls? From AOL?
Hope this helps.

IS THERE A LAWYER or LAW FIRM reading these posts?
Please take a class action lawsuit and sue AOL to get our money back.
Thank you.

I don]t have AOL or have had. I have a new phone number and I keep getting collection calls from AOL for the last people who had my phone number. I have repeatedly call AOL back at the number they say and I have told them that This number no longer belongs to the ” ” people, they say they will take care of this and within a week I am getting more calls from them. I will never use AOL at all.

July 5th, 2006 at 8:26pm
In reply to EVA and calls from AOL for former customer:
Suggest you get your number on the DO NOT CALL list, then report them if they violate it.
There is also a law against such calls. Check with your State Attorney General’s office to find out where to report the abuse you are receiving from them.

I am in Salem, Or. and this is one email from AOL Legal Department that I am dealing with. She is giving me the run around, saying that I am being charged, due to some website!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I may or may not be connected to this website and she would not tell me, but shoved me to the Fraud Department, waiting days, hours and 30-45 minutes of waiting!!!!! That is so sick. How dare them. More to come here, stay posted folks! By the way. email that lady at that email address and complain. After all, you has the job to take our complaints, right, so do it hard and fast.
