Scott Stapp interview w/ ChristianityToday.com

Blogged in Music on Saturday April 9, 2005

As I was looking through my music this morning, I saw the band Creed. It had been a while since I had heard them, so I turned them on. It got me thinking about what they had been up to. I know that they had recently split up and now are two different bands, but I still wanted to do some research on them. So I put Creed into Google and started looking around. I saw an article about Scott Stapp and ChristianityToday.com that was an interview. That looked quite interesting, so I started reading it.

The interview started explaining why Creed broke up and why they went on their separate ways. Most of Creed split up and created Alter Bridge while Scott Stapp went and started doing his own thing with music. Throughout reading the interview article, this one bit of the interview struck me.

ChristianityToday.com: Can you give me a specific example of how that “relearned love” is manifesting itself in your life?

Stapp: It’s simple for me: It’s giving without expecting anything in return. Prior to this, the way that I loved people around me, I always expected something—even if that was just expecting them to treat me like I treated them. But now I understand that real love is just giving without expecting anything. That’s what love is to me, and that’s what I feel that Christ showed us.

As it states in the beginning of the article, about The Passion of the Christ: Songs By album, I knew that CD very well. I purchased it not too long ago and play it very often because I love the songs on it. I knew the song that Scott Stapp had written for the CD, which is one the reasons the interview struck me so well on the Google search. His song, Relearn Love is one of my favorites, so I continued reading. Later in the interview…

ChristianityToday.com: On Creed’s website, you had answered an FAQ in part by writing, “Who are we to say that being a Christian is the only way to heaven?”

Stapp: Well, I can honestly tell you, I didn’t write that.

If you go ahead and read the interview in full, it is interesting to find that Scott Stapp was never asked if he was a Christian or not. This surprises me because there were many debates about whether or not Creed was a Christian band or not. Sort of makes me sad that something like that could happen. Creed’s website clearly says that they are not Christian, but yet so many of their songs have faith written in the background.

I found this interview very informative and good, yet revealing. I think I know more about Creed now and why they broke up. It was good to hear Scott Stapp’s insights and his faith.
