Peter Jennings, ABC News Anchor, Dies at 67 - New York Times

The tragic death of Peter Jennings actually almost brought me to tears. I’ve grown up listening to Peter Jennings on the TV and he was just part of my life. It’s very sad to see him die at such a young age, but with the lung cancer, there’s not much you can do.

Mr. Jennings’s official ABC biography notes, for example, that as a foreign correspondent, he was “in Berlin in the 1960’s when the Berlin Wall was going up,” and there again, as an anchor, “in the 1990’s when it came down.” Similarly, he was on the ground in Gdansk, Poland, for the birth of the Solidarity labor and political movement, and later for the overthrow of the country’s Communist government.

Peter Jennings

This guy has been around for a long time and he made an impact on a lot of the world as a journalist of the world. He has travelled around the world and seen almost everything, bringing it back to us. He will be missed greatly.

IEBlog : Standards and CSS in IE

Blogged in Geek, Code Development on Monday August 8, 2005

IEBlog : Standards and CSS in IE
In addition we’ve added support for the following

* HTML 4.01 ABBR tag
* Improved (though not yet perfect) fallback
* CSS 2.1 Selector support (child, adjacent, attribute, first-child etc.)
* CSS 2.1 Fixed positioning
* Alpha channel in PNG images
* Fix :hover on all elements
* Background-attachment: fixed on all elements not just body

It’s about time. IE 7.0 still presents a lot of problems with CSS and functionality, but they have come a lot closer and makes life a little easier on us web developers. Yet still, many things go unsupported and leave us in a crutch to still create a separate IE specific CSS style sheet in order to give IE the functionality it needs. They are still just slowly making progress.

Time, Web Development…travels…I think there’s time to live in there…

Blogged in General, My Life, News, Code Development on Monday August 8, 2005

My life has been crazy busy, crazy busy, crazy busy in the past few months. I have had sooooo much to do on my plate.

James and I have been working non-stop on Christian-lyrics.net with database entry, backend user database logistics, and much much more. There are so many good things planned for it. We are hoping to launch towards the end of August, a full launch. Right now we are in the soft launch stages, gathering affiliates and still inputting the data. Much work to get done, but we are VERY excited for it. We have a lot in store and still only a few weeks before our deadlines.

On top of that, I have about 5 other sites I’m starting up and managing. Cobs.net, equip4college.com, a private blog that isn’t released yet, I still have to manage this blog (sorry for the lack of updates everyone! I’m explaining why right now), and I have a few other sites I’m working on as well.

My life has just been crazy busy lately and I haven’t had much time to just chill. I drive to Santa Barbara everyday for work so that takes an hour of my time and then the rest of the time I’m working on web development to bring these sites to life.

I will be posting more about the trip up to Washington this past weekend, hopefully at some point this week if I find the time. But we had a GREAT time and the wedding was a blast. I got to meet a lot of new people and it was really good. It’s usually pretty decent weather when I visit up there, but it was really hot this time, oh well.

That’s all for now….zzzz I need sleep =p

GreenZap is Legit - Proof

Blogged in News, Geek on Wednesday August 3, 2005

GreenZap LegitAs I have seen in the past few months, a lot of people wanted Greenzap to be a scam. A lot of people created whole sites based purely on the opinion that they thought Greenzap was a scam. It has now been proven that Greenzap is NOT a scam. Greenzap has proven themselves to be a new company that has a great future. Podcasts, newsletters, real mailings, have all proven this. I’ve since received flyers from Greenzap notifying me of different things. They have devoted a lot of time to coding this new company and putting it together as new source.

Is Greenzap accepted on eBay? You bet. Greenzap is now being widely accepted throughout eBay and is becoming more and more popular. More and more stores are starting to accept it, both hard cash and webcash.

Many people are wondering what this webcash is. Well, webcash is something Greenzap created that has value. It’s used for transactions. While paypal has mostly free transactions, people doing hundred or thousand dollar sales on Paypal, you will start to pay high fees. Greenzap has started the method of using webcash to keep those costs down. Where someone might pay $7 or $9 in fees on Paypal, Greenzap will only charge you $1 or $2 which helps keep the costs down. This new business model is very interesting.

In the end, I trust Greenzap and I may consider start using them as my cash processor for online services depending on how much I spend online. I recommend everyone sign up today and start Zapping =)

Apple … Going Wireless?

Blogged in News, Geek on Tuesday August 2, 2005

While reading Forbes.com I came across some interesting information. Apple’s own Steve Jobs is trying to think ‘outside the box’ again. Steve is considered one of the wealthiest people in the world right now, as he was listed on the list of the 400 richest Americans.

With that in mind, just think about the money he can invest and use. Next, Steve was thinking one that how cool it would be if Apple moved into the wireless cellphone industry. You may be thinking, WHAT, are you serious?! Well, yes, I am serious. Apple has already started developing an iPod/cell phone with an alliance with Motorola to help development. What exactly is their goal for doing this? Apple wants to make it easier for all kinds of businesses to enter the mobile market.

Apple is expanding, once again, to the cell phone wireless industry to try to stretch their horizons. Apple has plans to release their first model later this summer (so yeah, really soon because there isn’t much summer left.) I am eager to see what Apple has to offer the community of the mobile market. Apple has put out incredible products in the past, lets see if they are able to keep the standard on this one.

Blingo.com Search - Sign Up Today!

Blogged in News, Geek on Tuesday August 2, 2005

BlingoBlingo.com has recently launched itself into the Search Industry and has done so with two feet first. They are offering free prize give-aways simply for using their search engine. But you may initially ask the question, why does it say ‘Powered by Google’ on top. Well, the search results are powered by Google and they are using an interesting method of searching and site design. Blingo.com has simplified the searches down and started by offering prize give-aways just for using the search engine so that they can get popular.

To date, they have given away over 7,000 prizes to people around the US. Yes, the US. This California based company is only offering prizes to people in the US. Why only in the US?

Blingo.com blog says..

These laws require us to submit certain information about our prizes and, in some cases, we even have to file bonds guaranteeing that we’ll give away the prizes we say we’re going to give away.

This company launched this year, 2005. The company is made up of a small team of successful entrepreneurs and coders. The co-founder and CEO used to work for iAmaze, which was acquired by AOL.

I personally think this is an interesting concept and people have attempted to this before. NetBux.org attempted to do this before while giving away cash simply for using the search engine. While netbux faded out, many other companies have been developing and sprouting into similar, yet different ideas.

I see a future for them and I hope they are successful, but we will see where they end up in 6 months, a year, 2 years, from now. Something to keep your eye on =)

Christina Cochran Survives Near-death Car Accident by God’s Graces

Blogged in Friends, News on Thursday July 28, 2005

Car Accident

Recently, this was brought to my attention. One of my friends from High School was in a near-death car accident yesterday. She was driving up in Fresno and swerved and hit a semi-truck. The truck driver died, but she survived with only minor scratches.

“I walked out of that with just a scrape on my arm. My little car ran into a semi, and the driver is dead. And I walked away. I have absolutely no idea how that happened.”

It really scared me to hear of this because of what I went through about 2 years ago. If you don’t know, 2 years ago I was in a near-death car accident myself.

“I put on my brakes and just closed my eyes.”

It truly is amazing what God did and saved her life. God saved my life and He’s doing it again. It makes me remember how many people I had supporting me and showing that they cared about me. Christina has a lot of friends and family. She is important to me and a lot of people I know. She currently is working up at a camp called Hume Lake. A Christian camp that I went to when I was in Middle School. She’s truly a blessing to have in my life and I’m very glad she is still alive. God really did protect her.

“Today, I had my window down instead of turning on the air conditioner. I climbed out the window because I couldn’t get my door open,” she said, shaking her head at how that coincidence helped her get away before her car caught fire. “And we are in range of cell phone service right here. When do you ever get cell phone service on this road?”

A lot of you may say that this all happened by chance, but it didn’t happen by chance. God worked throughout the whole accident. God was there in the start, God was there in the end.

We need to all keep the truck driver’s family and friends in our prayers as well for they need it just as well as Christina. We need to be supportive of all the parties involved with this accident. God really protected Christina and it is truly showing.

Localized Marijuana in Newbury Park, CA

Blogged in News on Saturday July 16, 2005

I saw this and couldn’t resist the laughter. I was almost dieing of laughter actually. The city next to my home town, about 5 minutes away, they found 800 pot plants…well, you can read the article here.

VenturaCountyStar.com writes…

Nearly 800 marijuana plants estimated to be worth at least $1.6 million were chopped down and seized Friday morning in Newbury Park after a two-month investigation by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and other agencies.

A 22-year-old man from the Los Angeles area was arrested, and authorities were still looking for another suspect Friday night. Servondo Ponce Villa was booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of being armed while illegally cultivating marijuana. His bail was set at $90,000.

The bust began early Friday morning with about 45 agents from the Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and a multi-agency narcotics task force.

The crop was in public open space managed by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. The site, nestled between Baxter Healthcare and a residential community, contains a natural irrigation ditch and was considered prime land for the harvest, authorities said.

“They’re set up pretty well to grow pot,” said Eric Nishimoto, sheriff’s spokesman.

Although the size of the grove was not as large as others in previous busts, authorities were concerned by the close proximity of the plants to a major corporation and a residential neighborhood.

The plants are believed to have been planted in March or April and would have been ready for harvest in August or September.

Narcotics agents first noticed the site during an air patrol about two months ago.

“It takes a lot of planning to do this,” said Sgt. Bret Uhlich with the sheriff’s narcotics division.

A similar grove was raided two years ago in the same location. At that time, about 760 plants were seized and no arrests were made.

Other stands of marijuana plants have been found from time to time in Los Padres National Forest and other state or national parks.

Harvesters of marijuana typically camp at the sites while the plants grow, and often arm themselves to protect their crops. Authorities said Villa had a machine gun.

“They’re taking guarding the grows more seriously these days,” Nishimoto said.

One danger of such operations on public land is that as growers protect their crops more aggressively, they could attack hikers or other people who are using public lands for recreational pursuits.

Although a hiking trail runs near the site of the marijuana crop seized Friday, the area of the harvest is not open to public use and it is not likely people would have hiked through it, said Glen Kinney, a park ranger with the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency.

Friday’s operation marked the first big pot bust this summer in Ventura County. After being cut down, the plants were taken to another location to be destroyed. Large marijuana crops are now buried rather than burned, Nishimoto said.

“Pot doesn’t grow back so we don’t have to worry about anything sprouting,” he said.

The seized marijuana is considered especially high grade because it is a seedless variety, harvested from the budding female plants. Growers maximize their crops by removing the male plants, which have seeds. Without the males, the female plants tend to grow more aggressively and produce more THC, the chemical that makes marijuana a stimulant.

The plants seized Friday were between 5 feet and 6 feet in height and not yet fully mature. Each plant can produce about a pound of street marijuana, which can sell for $2,000 to $3,000.
