Gravatar.com’s DNS is Down — Here’s a Fix!

Blogged in Wordpress, Wordpress Dev on Tuesday July 19, 2005

As most of you know, I run the gravatar plugin on my site that lets you display your gravatar on your comments. Well, as a lot of you also know, their domain expired. Their current DNS was not resolving, so I found out the hack to fix this and get the gravatars working again.

For those who care about fixing this, here it is.
Go into your gravatar plugin and do this:

Replace www.gravatar.com with 64.124.231.223

Your gravatars will once again be working after that =)

I still wonder, why would someone even let the domain get close to expiring. I always renew mine at least 3-4 months ahead of time when I want to keep them. Something silly, but here’s a quick hack for it.

Backing Up Is Not Just For Cars

Blogged in Wordpress, Wordpress Dev on Tuesday July 12, 2005

Your WordPress database contains every post, every comment and every link you have on your blog. If your database gets erased or corrupted, you stand to lose everything you have written. There are many reasons why this could happen and not all are things you can control. But what you can do is backup your data. After all, it is important isn’t it?

WordPress Backup Week July 23-30 aims to help you become more familiar with the process of backing up and protecting your data.

Step-by-step backup instructions will be available in the online manual, the WordPress Codex, and support provided online in the WordPress Support Forum to
help you through the process.

Guides will be available to help you backup your WordPress site and database for a variety of systems and server software such as cPanel, DirectAdmin, Plesk and vDeck. Consider using this Backup Week as an incentive to backup all your valuable documents and software, too.

These guides will assist you in determining:

  • When and how to make backups.
  • How to make things right after an unexpected data loss befalls your
    WordPress database.

Making backups is essential because problems inevitably occur and you need to be in a position to take action when disaster strikes. Spending a few minutes to make an easy, convenient backup of your database will allow you to spend even more time being creative and productive with your website.

For more information or to help volunteer on this WordPress Community Event, see WordPress Backup Week.

Wordpress 1.5.1.3 - Strayhorn Upgrade

Blogged in Wordpress Dev on Wednesday June 29, 2005

Wordpress version 1.5.1.3 labeled Strayhorn was recently released with many new bug fixes. There were some serious security holes available in the 1.5.1.2 package release, so it was recommended to ugprade. I made the upgrade just now and everything seems to be running smoothly.

Please feel free to e-mail me or comment here if you see that anything is broken or not working correctly — Please enjoy : )

Nice Search Plugin for Wordpress

Blogged in Wordpress Dev on Wednesday June 22, 2005

I would like to be the first to announce that I was the first blogger (other than the creator himself, Mark) to use the Nice Search plugin. The plugin isn’t that very difficult to desigin, but the idea behind it is ingenius. Mark did a great job at creating this plugin and made it very easy to use.

The plugin simply lets you do http://www.bleakgeek.com/search/query-here so that you can search for anything just by using that URI instead of the index.php?s=. It gives it a better look and I give him my props for that!

Site Development

Blogged in Geek, Wordpress Dev on Saturday May 14, 2005

Many, Many, Many changes going on with this website. Many new additions from the latest design and many things are still yet to be developed. I want to see if you can point out some of the new things on the site, on both the main page and individual pages. Let me know what you think and if you want to see things done differently. My site is here to please the audience, so I want to hear from you!

Site Transfer

Blogged in Wordpress, Wordpress Dev, Wordpress Themes on Thursday May 12, 2005

Howdy folks! I recently moved my site around a little bit. You won’t notice much of a difference besides the design of it, but I changed the structure of it. A lot of it still broken so I will be working on that still, but the functionality of it should be back to normal.

Hope you enjoy the new theme and I hope to be putting out some other themes for the liking as well.

UPDATE: Apparently through the transfer, it seems that my paged are working now and you can view all previous posts. This is very weird because I didn’t change anything and it *should* be broken right now. Weird, but I’m glad it works now :)

Site Construction/Design/News

Blogged in News, Wordpress Dev on Thursday May 5, 2005

Come summer (which officially starts tomorrow for me), I will be redesigning this blog completely and redoing the entire structure of it. A lot of the site is broken and doesn’t work, so I’m going to rebuild it from the ground up. Don’t fret, I know you are, so I will keep all my posts and all my images. http://photos.bleakgeek.com is staying and I will possibly redesign that as well if I have time.

The site design will go along the lines of…wait a second, I can’t tell you now. That would ruin the whole surprise! But anyway, I will be redesigning it in my spare time over summer. Probably only take a couple days of solid work to get it down and ready to launch, so we’ll see how it goes.

I have a lot of other sites on my hands such as halflifetalk.com, fandismal.com, christian-lyrics.net, cobs.net, a website for a teacher back home, a website coding job for a friend at college, and plenty more I can think of that I will be running. Many great things to come, so keep an eye out for more updates on the many sites I run. If I get enough incoming through the sites, I may just upgrade my web hosting package to a higher level so that I get better control over my hosting, but I’m sticking with the cheapest hosting for now until I deem it necessary to upgrade.

Hope you are enjoying bleakgeek.com and let me know if you are, it will encourage me to redesign it faster and better. Blessings –Jonathan
